The use of coffins and jars as funerary receptacles was common across Southeast Asia. During the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries AD, cremation was the dominant mortuary tradition on the Angkorian plains, but in the Cardamom Mountains to the south, contemporaneous groups practised a unique burial tradition involving the deposition of un-cremated bone in exposed ceramic vessels and log coffins. The authors present the first geochemical analysis of individuals from this highland culture, specifically the site of Phnom Pel. The childhood diets of those interred in jars and coffins may have been sourced from different areas within the Cardamom Mountains, suggesting that the individuals came from discrete groups.

—Michel Foucault, History of Sexuality, Vol. 1Although my critical focus has shifted in recent years onto other areas—both earlier and later—of novel studies, I find myself returning to the novels of the 1840s, which is, in my view, the pivotal moment in the history and theory of the British novel. This is the moment when novels relegated forever to the past a future that ensured domestic contentment. During the period from 1847 to 1900, as Georg Lukács tells the story, the historical novel faltered and then froze in its tracks, as the narrative of an individual caught in the winds of historical change capitulated to descriptions of demonically fetishized objects that obscured the engines of change. What Lukács doesn't mention is that, halfway through that same period, novels abruptly ceased to formulate a country house providing what Hannah Arendt has called “a model of national housekeeping.” From the ashes of that bourgeois appropriation of certain aspects of the genteel way of life, the novels of the 1840s assembled a single-family household as a kinship system uniquely capable of operating at every level of English society. To go by these novels, one would think that belonging to such a household was not only the same as belonging to English society itself but was also necessary to one's biological survival. In returning to that moment, I want to consider, more pointedly, what these two observations concerning the form of the Victorian novel have to do with one another, a question that was very much in the air in 1977, when I received my doctorate and took up my first university post.

Of Franco Moretti's masterworks of literary history and theory, why is it the loosely assembled collection of occasional pieces Distant Reading that has captured the literary critical spotlight? Why now, just when enrollments in the humanities are plummeting, new technologies for storing and distributing information are revolutionizing interpersonal communication and scientific methods, and global is well on its way to replacing interdisciplinary as the descriptor favored by university administrators? Moretti is not alone in attempting to reconfigure a discipline that tends to favor the singular text and national literary traditions for a generation of students who apparently could not care less about either. In his effort to adapt literary history and form to the conditions of globalization that make them seem irrelevant, he asks us to abandon our obsessive focus on canonical texts—to start instead considering how certain forms of literature made the quantum leap from nation to world and what formal changes they underwent in doing so. This project he warns, will require us to “unlearn” how to read a literary text and to question the assumption that “world literature” is an object to be known: “We must think of it as a problem that asks for a new critical method” (46). He famously exposes this problem by staging various encounters between literary form and quantitative analysis.

Summary
In the selections of his work I will examine here, Balibar creates the conditions of possibility for thinking about women and novels outside the binaries that inevitably oppose women to men and fiction to political philosophy. To understand just how much is at stake in considering women and novels without their definitional opposites, one must begin by establishing what these particular categories of analysis share. Both are included under a dominant term – women, by way of the household, under political society, and novels, by way of realism, under political philosophy. The problem doubles as political philosophy acknowledges that women and novels play a role within modern political societies, only to designate that role as politically insignificant and/ or off limits to political critique. Women and novels mark the point at which the private life of both household and personal experience begins. In practice, this means that if we want to think about women on an equal footing with men, we must think of them as if they were or should be men. So, too, if we want to think of the narrative machinery of novels as comparable to that of political philosophy, we have to discount the very narrative operations that identify novels as works of fiction. In disavowing the political operations of these categories – that amounts to disavowing that their operations are indeed political – we inadvertently acknowledge that they serve as the “exclusive inclusion,” the internal limit and foundation that a modern political society must suppress in order to be just that, a modern political society. Among the growing number of political philosophers who are trying to imagine a world beyond capitalism, Balibar is, to my knowledge, the only one who openly acknowledges that to do so we must confront the roles of women and fiction under capitalism.
The riddle of reproduction
Given his intellectual debt to Louis Althusser and his collaboration with a group of graduates of the École Normale Supérieure in a project “on the French school system” during the period when Althusser was formulating his concept of ideology, it seems fitting that Balibar should still be bent on solving the riddle of Althusser's claim that “the ultimate condition for production is the reproduction of the conditions of production.”

Summary
During the Victorian period, the novel confronted a new definition of human nature that challenged Enlightenment models of individualism. Across a swath of disciplines – not only biology and natural history, but sociology, psychology, theology, moral philosophy, and political economy as well – liberal individualism struggled with the problem of man as a population or species. Writing in a form that had traditionally aimed at forming a household that would in turn reproduce self-governing individuals, Victorian novelists could hardly avoid this problem. To maintain the novel’s preeminence, they had to maintain the individual’s viability in a milieu newly hostile to individualism. Victorian novelists of all stripes responded to this challenge by staging the conflict between individual and species as a conflict between gender and sexuality. In carrying the novel into new areas of modern social and not-so-social life, they also broke it into pieces when serialization began. This change in the mode of publication coincided with the novel’s formal fragmentation into multiple narrators and plots, none of which had an exclusive purchase on truth. As a genre, moreover, the novel devolved into such subgenres as detective fiction, gothic fiction, children’s literature, adventure stories, the novels of the romance revival, and sensation novels, all of which reveal how gender relations – and by proxy liberal society – fail either to encompass or to exclude the populations on which the middle classes were coming to depend. An account of gender and sexuality in the Victorian novel is consequently an account of a conflict that did not yield satisfying resolutions so much as a variety of memorable failures.

We present the first radiocarbon dates from previously unrecorded, secondary burials in the Cardamom Mountains, Cambodia. The mortuary ritual incorporates nautical tradeware ceramic jars and log coffins fashioned from locally harvested trees as burial containers, which were set out on exposed rock ledges at 10 sites in the eastern Cardamom Massif. The suite of 28 14C ages from 4 of these sites (Khnorng Sroal, Phnom Pel, Damnak Samdech, and Khnang Tathan) provides the first estimation of the overall time depth of the practice. The most reliable calendar date ranges from the 4 sites reveals a highland burial ritual unrelated to lowland Khmer culture that was practiced from cal AD 1395 to 1650. The time period is concurrent with the 15th century decline of Angkor as the capital of the Khmer kingdom and its demise about AD 1432, and the subsequent shift of power to new Mekong trade ports such as Phnom Penh, Udong, and Lovek. We discuss the Cardamom ritual relative to known funerary rituals of the pre- to post-Angkorian periods, and to similar exposed jar and coffin burial rituals in Mainland and Island Southeast Asia.

Summary
Until the 1980s, when feminism emerged as a major force in novel studies, scholars and critics by and large read novels novelistically. In saying that we read novelistically, I refer to a process by which the critic identifies some kind of lack in the protagonist – a lack that someone or something else must supply. Once the protagonist is supplied with the missing ingredient – for example, Robinson Crusoe with land, Tom Jones with a patrimony, and Edward Waverley with English identity – that protagonist can overcome the obstacle that keeps him from improving his position in life and achieve recognition within the community whose order and vigor he consequently repairs and renews. His lack at once defines the magic ingredient that enables self-fulfillment along with social empowerment and creates the basis of identification for readers who feel that lack and wish to see it fulfilled. Feminist literary theory made a swift and telling intervention in this way of reading British fiction, when it persuaded a whole generation of readers to consider what female protagonists lacked rather than their male counterparts. During the 1980s this way of reading changed not only the novels read and taught in classrooms but also the imagined relationship between individual and nation that compels the identification of reader with protagonist. Feminist critics began to read Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders in place of his Robinson Crusoe, Samuel Richardson's Pamela for Henry Fielding's Tom Jones, and Jane Austen's Emma rather than Walter Scott's Waverley.

Summary
The impact and tenacity of the argument launched in Thomas Malthus's famous Essay on the Principle of Population (1798) can mean only one thing: the nineteenth century opened onto a very different field of narrative possibilities than had preoccupied and entertained the previous century, possibilities in terms of which Victorian authors and readers would imagine their lives, write their novels, and hammer out domestic and colonial policy. Although infant mortality rates had changed little for most of the people and would not improve significantly throughout the nineteenth century, the English population was growing younger. Compounded by the fact that no bouts of plague, famine, or other natural disasters had limited the growth of the population, people were marrying at a younger age. Marry a man with whom you were emotionally compatible if you could, but marry a man of material means you must, such novels as Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1816) seemed to say, or else face the degradation of impoverishment or, worse, the need to work for a living. Given that the population under twenty-five years of age shot up from 46 to 58 percent of the population between the mid-eighteenth century and the beginning of Victoria's reign in 1837, courtship rituals to ensure that deserving women would meet and win the hearts of eligible men could not have been considered a frivolous activity. Nor could knowledge of the social rituals of the sort that fill Austen's pages be distinguished from the political power of a group of men and women who were neither aristocratic nor forced to work for a living. The delicate nuances of feeling and elaborate rituals that gave those feelings both vigor and charm not only consolidated this group but also contained the secret of its perpetuation.
Two Consecutive Outbreaks of Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia (Xanthomonas Maltophilia) in an Intensive-care Unit Defined by Restriction Fragment-Length Polymorphism Typing

Objective:
To investigate and control consecutive outbreaks of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections in intensive-care–unit (ICU) patients.
Design:Epidemiological investigation; restriction fragment-length polymorphism typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of genomic DNA of outbreak strains; institution of infection control measures to limit spread.
Setting:The medical-surgical ICU in an 800-bed tertiary-care center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Results:S maltophilia was recovered from 14 ICU patients (12 infected, 2 colonized) between February 1993 and February 1994. Ten of the 14 patient isolates and 1 environmental isolate were available for PFGE typing. Patient isolates from 6 of the first 10 patients were identical. Isolates from the next 3 of 4 patients and an isolate recovered from a ventilator being used by a patient not infected with S maltophilia also were identical, but different from the first 6. The ventilator isolate was temporally associated with the latter 4 patients.
Conclusion:Molecular typing allowed us to determine that there were two separate consecutive S maltophilia outbreaks rather than a single protracted outbreak. Recovery of S maltophilia from patient ventilators and an in-line suction catheter suggests that the organism may have been spread by cross-contamination from contaminated equipment or from an environmental source.

High field Silicon-29 NMR is used to study the structural intermediates in tetramethyl and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TMOS and TEOS) low pH sol-gel reactions. Linear oligomers as well as ring components of various sizes are identified and their evolution in the sols is followed. Differences in the number of compact ring structures are related to differences in gel times. Reactions are followed for various silicon alkoxide:water:acid molar ratios.
